A Morgridge Institute for Research summer camp that has immersed hundreds of Wisconsin rural high school students in cutting-edge stem cell research is in the national spotlight, starting with a front-page news feature in The Wisconsin State Journal.
The story, by WSJ reporter Cassidy McDonald, ran on the front page on Saturday, July 18, and was redistributed to newspapers across the country by The Associated Press. Among dozens of others, the story appeared in online versions of The Houston Chronicle, The Miami Herald, The San Francisco Examiner, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Within Wisconsin, the story also was republished in The La Crosse Tribune, The Racine Journal Times and The Chippewa Herald. One of the hallmarks of the summer camp is its statewide reach, with some participating schools making a four- to five-hour drive for the week-long camp in the Discovery Building (see map below).
This summer, students and teachers joined the camp from high schools in Winter, Mellen, Solon Springs, Three Lakes, Prentice, Tomah, Soldiers Grove and Benton.
The camp has proven to be a showcase of UW-Madison’s leadership and top talent in stem cell science, including contributions from the Wisconsin Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center, the School of Medicine and Public Health, the College of Engineering and others.
