Life
sciences are a winner in Wisconsin

University Research Park alone in Madison now has more than
3,500 employees generating over $260 million in annual payroll. These high-tech
jobs pay, on average, over $60,000. UW-Madison is generally recognized as the
No. 2 research institute in the country, recently pulling in $880 million in

Companies can seek grants, scholarships to attend 2010 BIO show in Chicago
Wisconsin biotechnology companies with an interest in attending the BIO International Convention at Chicago’s McCormick Place may apply for grants and scholarships from two state-based sources. Up to 20,000 people from 40 states and 50 countries are expected to attend the May 3-6 convention, which was last held in Chicago in 2006. Read more here >

Iowa start-up moves

UW faculty member conducting research on human embryonic stem, or hES, cells.

UW-Madison receives
$9.5 million to plan for flu pandemic

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has received a
five-year, $9.5 million grant Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation grant to develop an early warning system for pandemic flu, the
school said in a news release
Thursday. UW-Madison virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka is the primary
investigator on the project. An international team of scientists will work with

Kevin Conroy says the number of deaths from colon cancer
could be reduced significantly if people had an easy, reliable method of
detecting the disease in its early stage. Although a colonoscopy is very
effective, the invasive nature of the procedure is a deterrent to having it
done, he said. That has helped make colorectal cancer the most preventable yet
least prevented cancer, he said. His Madison-based company, Exact Sciences
