URP spurs nearly 4,000 high-paying jobs

Wisconsin State Journal

First established in Madison in 1984, it now provides 3,800 local jobs at an average salary of almost $70,000. What is it?

a) Wal-Mart

b) University Research Park

c) UW Hospital and Clinics

d) East Towne Mall

Answer: b) University Research Park. Currently, more than 3,800 people are employed by the 126 businesses and organizations in the University Research Park. In 2013, total payroll was in excess of $260 million and the tenants in the park paid $3.6 million in property taxes.

Located at Mineral Point Road and Whitney Way, this 351-acre research and technology park focuses on early-stage and growth-oriented businesses.

Most of the businesses in the research park are in the engineering, computer and life sciences sectors. However, the research park includes a wide variety of tenants. Some names like Exact Sciences, Ultratec and First Business Bank may be familiar. However, many of the tenants are likely unfamiliar to most of us. Who knows which one will be the next Exact Sciences or Ultratec?
