Distinguished Entrepreneurs Lunch: Mike Forbes, CEO of Alter Eco

UW BusinessCome join us on Thursday, November 11 to our Distinguished Entrepreneurs Lunch to meet Mike Forbes, CEO of Alter Eco. Mike is flying in from California which is why we moved the session to Thursday. While Mike has an impressive pedigree of building brands in the food and beverage space – from olive oil to cookies to booze – and a BBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from Harvard Business School, it was an undiagnosable health issue, combined with his on-the-ground experience on farms in California that dramatically shifted his career path to take the helm of Alter Eco.

After going through the traditional medical system to try to pinpoint his wife’s health issues with no resolve, Mike and his wife threw out all processed foods and learned to cook healthy meals. That led them to join a food co-op which opened their eyes to where their food comes from and the difference in flavors when produced ethically. They forged a new way of living. Mike’s wife’s health issues disappeared, they each lost 25lbs, and felt better than ever.

Mike’s mission is to establish Alter Eco as a brand that helps the planet first — and also makes really delicious chocolate. Yes, he wants to grow the company, but not for the sake of growth. His goal is to give Alter Eco the bandwidth and resources to provide career growth opportunities for their passionate team and network of farmers, and to develop lasting solutions for the climate problems caused by the consumer packaged goods industry. At the end of the day, Mike wants to inspire huge food companies to follow Alter Eco’s lead on green initiatives, so the world will be a better place for his daughter and future generations to come.
